An Audience with Pope John Paul II ...
... in Rome on the 4th December 2000

Extract from a press report ... "The greatest honour … "
"The greatest honour of her life," is how Lord Provost Helen Wright described her meeting with Pope John Paul Il. The lord provost was representing Dundee in Rome as the guest of Bishop Vincent Logan of Dunkeld at the celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of the Scots College in the Eternal City. She joined First Minister Henry McLeish, Scottish Secretary John Reid and the civic leaders from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. Mrs Wright said, "It was a hugely emotional moment for me personally and something I will never forget. "He is one of the world's great leaders and I felt deeply honoured and privileged to meet him. "I was also very proud to be representing the city on such a historic occasion. An occasion which I feel, though rooted in the past, points the way for the future of the new Scotland. "We came together from different religious backgrounds, and none, and we met as friends in a way which we all hope will be reflected in the Scotland of the 21st century." Our picture shows Lord Provost Wright being presented to the Pope by Cardinal Thomas Winning of Glasgow. (The Courier December 2000)
